Περίληψη ομιλίας: This paper takes up the question of how ancient writers of prose fiction conceptualized their literary endeavor. Focusing on Longus’ novel Daphnis and Chloe, and drawing on Achilles Tatius and Philostratus, as well as contemporary rhetorical theorists including Menander Rhetor and Sextus Empiricus, I argue that ancient writers thought about fiction not exclusively in terms of true vs. false, but also as a place of encounter between mythos and historia, that, especially, offered special resources for thinking about the relationship between divine and human realms.
